A couple of days ago I opened a new tin of Golden Glow Broken Virginia Flakes from Samuel Gawith and paired it with my newest pipe from Pauls Pipes (http://www.etsy.com/shop/PaulsPipes) called the "Bent Egg". The tin art is a simple glowing sun which leads me to believe that it's going to be a wonderful, warm, flavorful smoke. So I opened the tin and what I found were beautiful light & brightly colored Virginia tobacco that is pressed, cut/sliced in long ribbons. The tin note has a sweet, wet hay and bread aroma which is kind of lovely so I was already excited to smoke a bowl. The moisture level is nice and moist...not too dry at all. I'm not going to dry it out because I don't think it's that wet, but we shall see. I shredded the broken flakes, packed it in my Bent Egg, lit it with my IM Corona Old Boy, and tamped it with my antler tamper (also from Paul). At first light the burning baccy produced light puffs of smoke and I really couldn't pinpoint any flavors. So far the smoke was uneventful. This lasted for awhile. It wasn't until I passed the halfway point before I could enjoy it. Now I started to get a little bit of sweet hay-like flavoring over my palate. The puffs of smoke was getting a bit thicker but I'm a litter unimpressed because it just took too long for everything to come together. This is definitely a mild smoke with very light nicotine levels. If this baccy could only start as it ended, it would be something I could rave about...but it's a little too late which is too bad. I do like the way it finishes so I really can't bash this blend. It's a middle of the road baccy if you ask me. I smoked a bowl of it this morning with the same results. Maybe I'll let the baccy dry a little and see if I get different results. If it does change, I'll be sure to update this entry. Have a great cool Saturday my piping friends!

Thanks Ben. And a double thank you for recommending one of Paul Menards pipes! He's a nice guy with great pipes! Love the way this pipe feels in my hands, love the way it smokes, and love the entire package (pipe/pipe bag/anter tamper/leather pipe stand). Finally, love all of Samuel Gawith baccy...will try to order in bulk next time :)
