A few weeks ago Trashdigger123 (Ben) posted a Trashdigger cob pipe on IG which piqued my interest. You see, I have a few pipes in my collection but haven't added a corn cob...until now. We started a trade...a cob pipe that he made himself (corn cob, harvested cattail for shank, and a stem) for a tin of tobacco of my choosing. I sent him a tin of Ashton Rainy Day. Yesterday I smoked Bell's Three Nuns in it and it smoked like my other more expensive pipes...just fine! Should I be surprised? NO. Cob pipes have been around forever and will continue to be. I don't know if I'll smoke this particular pipe again because it was received in a trade and I'd like to have it around for awhile. If I put it in my rotation of pipes I'm sure it wouldn't last. So, I guess I'll look for another cob pipe and then add that to the rotation :) Pipes up to the Trashdigger Cob Special as I call it!! Thanks again Ben!
This morning I tried opened a new tin from Peterson of Dublin called Irish Flake and paired it with my BriarBird Albatross Line Billiard pipe. This blend dark tobaccois a combination of Burley, Kentucky & Virginia that has been air-cured, flue-cured & dark fired then pressed and cut into flakes. These nicely pressed flake cuts are somewhere in between a dry and moist tobacco. I believe that it should be dried out for a few for a better smoke or you can be impatient like myself and give it about 20-minutes. The tin note has a cooked meat aroma with a hint of pepper spice...like beef jerky! There is also a hint of soap or floral scent. Something like a collection of those soap bars of the past that your aunt use to collect and display in the bathroom :) Anyhow, I rubbed the tobacco into smaller pieces then lit & tamped it which produced light puffs of smoke. This remained thoughout but after about 1/2 a bowl I could pick up a room note which is similar to the tin note although very faint. The flavors on my palate were mild with a little sweet smoke pit/campfire taste. Not too bad but could be kicked up a notch or two. At first I thought that this was a weak smoke but at the halfway point the nicotine levels picked up to a medium-high level. Not too shabby and not a kick in the butt like Sammy-G's Virginia Flake or Black XX. I needed to re-light a couple of times but I wouldn't complain about that. In the end, the flavors aren't bad and I would consider this a mild, relaxing & recommended smoke! UPDATE: I've been smoking this blend more often now and it is climbing to the top of my list of "Baccy to smoke in the cold"...if I had one! I get a nice coat of goodness over my tongue and it's a baccy meal I'll welcome anyday! Two pipes up for sure!! |
